In the late 50s, the British air forces conducted comparative tests, the goal of which was to choose a replacement for the Venom fighter-bomber which, as it turned out, had an unacceptably poor performance while operating at lower altitudes. According to the test results, it was decided to create a specialized fighter modification of the Hunter, the FGA.9, with a reinforced airframe construction. This model took part in combat operations in the Rhodesian Bush War, and carries the Rhodesian Air Force livery. The Hunter FGA.9 is armed with four 30mm cannons and can be equipped with 36 unguided SNEB rockets or AIM-9E Sidewinder guided air-to-air missiles, and also is capable to carry up to four bombs totaling 1000 pounds.
